It’s only been a few weeks since my 12-part learn-and-share blogging series ended. Up until this point, I hadn’t dived in to the analytics…not because I wasn’t curious, or I didn’t care, but much more-so because I didn’t want numbers to drive the documenting, sharing and introspecting process. I wrote and shared consistently because I wanted to, because I declared that I would, and because the weight of word is binding…a promise to me but also to you. But as the themes, imagery, and takeaways of this writing body settle, I continue to receive feedback and encouragement bot just for this work, but even more to continue sharing and publishing.
I love It’s been a few weeks since I completed my 12-part learn-and-share series.
I love writing. I love it as a medium to process. I love the ways in which it allows me to communicate. I love that I’ve been intentional about strengthening this skill I love that my writing has power to motivate, resonate and inspire. This isn’t the last you’ll be hearing from me…I will certainly be writing and sharing much more. But I still need to regroup. I too need to go back to revisit this 12-part series. I need to understand if the story and message are clear to me even after “distancing” and “processing”. I need to understand what works, what doesn’t, what hit home, what didn’t. I don’t have a timeline to publish my next body of work, but already have a couple of ideas I’m teasing out. Whatever the case, I’m invested in doing more and doing it better.
Until then, here are a little insights into the process and the metrics.
BLOGGING & PUBLISHING
Publicly announcing this project was a mechanism to; 1) not back out; 2) follow through; 3) have accountability. I work best with stricture and timelines. When I announce my next writing project, I’m definitely using a similar formula
Having a predetermined framework and fleshing out the sequence of blogs was instrumental in me keeping momentum, but also writing seperate-but-connected pieces. Big shout out to @amandla for helping me cement this framework from the get go and for her creative suggestion in utilising food as the connective medium for these pieces…they were so authentic to me, and really hit home with readers
Creating a website from scratch wasn’t as easy as I anticipated…even with a platform like Wix that is super-user friendly, I still had a number of hiccups made even more difficult by being limited to an iPad. For someone that’s worked in the tech space and has only ever spent time critiquing and testing, it was humbling to be on the other side of things…I’m not yet at a place where outsourcing makes sense, but I want to spend more time learning, editing and restructuring my page, to fit my aesthetics
Writing for yourself is not equal to writing for others. Finding the balance between journal entry/stream of consciousness and readers-digest/relatable work took a lot of thought and editing (see next bullet). I had to be more selective about imagery, over-emphasis where necessary, provide lots of context, and summarise and re-summarise at many points. Harder still, I needed to ensure that in my efforts to be transparent and bold, I could maintain confidentially and anonymity while still being authentic to the main character — me...my journey, my growth, my learnings
Editing is the longest part of the process. When you’ve been working on a piece for a long time, are tired, and are worried about having to publish within a certain timeline, you’re more prone to making mistakes. The longer, the piece, the longer the editing process. With no copy-editor and Grammarly as my “sponsored” sidekick, I did my best to put out good and coherent pieces. Yet still, my work wasn’t error free. On average, it took me 2-3 day span of 4-5 hour writing blocks to edit….most of the time I was reading out loud, going through paragraph at a time, then focusing on flow, selection of imagery placing some etc. As I think through publishing other works I need to find more support either through writing 2-3 blogs ahead of time and/or finding communities of friends and family to provide feedback before publishing
